An assortment of clay piñas from San José de Gracia, Michoacán, built with the pastillaje technique

Artisan story

Piñas from Michoacán and the Pastillaje Technique

A piña is thousands of separate pieces. Each petal is rolled between fingertips and set in place by hand, one at a time.

San José de Gracia, Michoacán

Born from the hands of master artisans in San José de Gracia, Michoacán, our collection of piñas reflects artistry and tradition passed down over generations.

Each piece is crafted by hand from clay and tepetate, a form of volcanic rock, then meticulously adorned using the traditional technique of pastillaje.

Pastillaje, petal by petal

Every tiny petal, scale, and spine is shaped between the fingertips, with thousands of delicate pieces coming together to form each finished masterpiece.

The larger piñas want a little space and a little height, the same as the rest of the decor we carry. One on a console reads better than three on a shelf.
